BALTICA 2015. Concert FOUR WORDS

On July 18, at 13.00, on the stage of the Embassy of Latgale GORS, a place will take the concert “Four Words” of the International Folklore Festival „Baltica 2015”. This year, the theme of the festival is “Heritage”. During the concert, it will be revealed through the core elements – the earth, water, fire and air – the heritage of the Latvian folklore. The conclusion of the concert will be enriched with one non-excludable element – the Sun.

The time and world is so diverse. There is a dark, and there is a light, night and morning, winter and summer. There is the world that reveals itself to our eyes and there is a world that could not be seen – the one we live and the one beyond. There is the world created by the nature and the one created by the hand of men. The feminine and masculine, expressed and hidden. The world of a non-stop movement and interaction. The word is a part of the world, a part of its beginning, and the first impulse of its creation. It is a vibration, energy that affects the space of the world. The core elements – the earth, fire, water and air – the four words, each of which is  holding in a whole world.   

In the grand concert “Four Words” a participation will take the most outstanding and sonorous folklore ensembles of Latvia – the group of the traditional singing „Saucējas”, folklore friends` group „Vīteri”, youth folklore group „Kokle”, folklore dance group „Dandari”, folklore ensembles „Vilkači”, „Rūžupis veiri”, „Grodi”, family folklore group „Garataka”, folklore ensembles „Dimzēns”, „Leimaņi” and Baltinava Etnographic Ensemble. The concert of the folklore festival “Baltica” will reveal the traditional songs, dances, musical instruments and the richness of traditions in its entire splendor. 

Entrance to the concert is free of charge by presenting of the entrance cards, which are available at the box office of the Embassy of Latgale GORS, starting from July 1 until the day of the concert.

International Folklore Festival „Baltica 2015” will take a place in different places of Latvia starting from July 15 to 19, 2015. Festival „Baltica” is a significant event for all Baltic nations, which demonstrates the values of the traditional culture – songs, instrumental music, storytelling, games, dances, as well as the folk applied arts, crafts and other expressions of the folk culture and art. In the festival will participate the ethnographic ensembles, folklore groups, folk music groups, storytellers and other individual performers.

International Folklore Festival „Baltica” is organized by the Latvian National Center for Culture in the collaboration with the self-governments of cities and municipalities.

The participants of the folklore festival “Baltica 2015”, who are not performing in the concert, can reserve the entrance cards for the concert “For Words” of the July 18, taking place at the Embassy of Latgale GORS at 13.00, by calling 22020206 or sending an e-mail to gors.vestis [at] rezekne.lv.

It is request for one representative of each folklore group/ensemble call or send an e-mail with the exact amount of the necessary entrance cards. The number of available seats is limited.

The participant entrance cards will be available at the box office of the Embassy of Latgale GORS, before the concert.

After a short technical inhale, the Embassy of Latgale GORS in the beginning of July opens its new concert season of 2015/2016. For the enjoyment of the summer – film and music evenings on the roof terrace, concert of the folklore festival “Baltica” and hot summer rhythms at the outstanding concert.

Of Fridays and Saturdays of July and August, on the terrace of the Embassy of Latgale GORS, a place will take the evenings of the film and music. On Fridays, a half an hour before the screening (starting at 21.30) – the attendants will have an opportunity to enjoy the jazz performance. In case of the bad weather conditions, the event will be held in the lobby of the third floor. The first film and music evening will be consummated with “The Great Beauty” (La Grande Belezze) – an outstanding movie by Paolo Sorrentino. Film in the original language with Latvian subtitles.

The most outstanding celebration of the traditional culture in Baltics – the international folklore festival „Baltica 2015”. The concert planned at the Embassy of Latgale GORS, in the songs and dances of the folklore ensembles from different districts of Latvia – „Dimzēns”, „Leimaņi”, „Grodi”, „Garataka”, „Vilkači”, „Rūžupis vieri”, „Saucējas”, the ethnographic ensemble of Baltinava, „Vīteri”, „Kokle”, „Dandari” and „Lādezers” – will divulge the traditions, families, strength of a man, dance and the heritage of the nowadays. Free admission with the free entrance cards which are available for pick up at the ticket office of the Embassy of Latgale GORS, starting from July 1.

A summer evening pleasure with the compositions by Astor Piazzolla, themes of the South America and the jazz atmosphere. Concert program will be performed by the quartet musicians of the chamber orchestra „Sinfonietta Rīga”: Kristiāna Šīrante (violin), Agnese Kanniņa-Liepiņa (violin), Artūrs Gailis (alto), Kārlis Klotiņš (cello) and percussionist Ivo Krūskops.

A romantic comedy of Richard Linklater “Before midnight” at the special summer film and music evening event series. Starring: Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy. Photo Exhibition. A MOMENT AT THE NATIONAL PARK OF RAZNA

From July 6 to July 31, in the lobby of the first floor of the Embassy of Latgale GORS will be displayed a photo exhibition “A Moment at National Park of Razna”. The authors of the photography tried to capture and perpetuate the senses of the nature, adventures and emotional experience created by the National Park of Razna.

The Embassy of Latgale GORS Celebrates 2 Years!

At the end of May, it`s second anniversary did celebrate the Embassy of Latgale GORS – the multifunctional concert hall located in Rēzekne, that in 2013 has been the first one to begin a successful implementation of the network of regional concert halls across Latvia. 

„Although, only two years have passed, there is a feeling that we have experienced already a culturally enriched lifetime. We are delighted for the proof of the necessity of the regional concert hall in Latgale. We have created an outstanding concert venue not only in the level of Latvia, but courageously saying – in the level of Europe. Also, the good example of the Embassy of Latgale GORS has promoted the denomination “concert hall” to become almost a fashion peak and the name of every culture venue. However, still the most important for us are the characteristics of the Embassy of Latgale GORS – exceptionally high quality acoustics, technical multifunctionality, high professionalism, and the story told about Latgale. All this is appreciated by the visitors, Latvian and international musicians, as well as the professionals of the industry.” acknowledges the head of the Embassy of Latgale GORS, the member of the board of Austrumlatvijas koncertzāle Ltd. Doubts and Skepticism have Stayed Behind

The year of 2014 was the first fully functional year of the Embassy of Latgale GORS, presenting and allowing to reason about the results of it`s work, despite the doubts and skepticism that was existing before it`s grand opening. The expectations are fulfilled even better than planned. During the previous year, the Embassy of Latgale GORS has been attended by more than 150 thousand visitors, in the concert hall a place took 150 culture events of various genres (Latvian and foreign professional stage art, music, visual and new media art and other events; comparing with the year 2013 – 92 events) and 14 exhibitions. This has been a venue for 45 seminars, as well as the sightseeing place for almost 340 excursion groups from Latvia and abroad. Admittedly, the official statistics does not reflect couple hundreds of the film screenings and the visitors that have attended the concert hall with other interest than the culture events. 

Taking a closer look on the financial figures, the proceeds of Austrumlatvijas koncertzāle, Ltd. in 2014 exceeds the indicators of the year 2013 more than twice, reaching 1382,5 thousands euro, but the expenses -  1322,7 thousands of euro. The profit in 2014 reached 59,8 thousands euro and has been used for coverage of the previous year loses, factually incurred during the building process of the concert hall. 

Latgale in Latvia and the Look Beyond the Borders

The opening of the Embassy of Latgale GORS in the region was the first step for providing the high quality culture activities. In 2014, an important factor of the professional art availability in the region has become a collaborative contract with the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Latvia. Also, very important is the project support from the State Culture Capital Foundation and other funds.

The Embassy of Latgale GORS has become not only an important and unique culture venue with an outstanding acoustic concert halls, but also a high quality destination for the culture lovers and professionals, a developer of the city and regional social environment change, a promoter of the city image, a highly popular sightseeing object.  

During the attendance and it`s tendencies research, it becomes noticeable that the region of the visitors and service users is not only within the region of Latgale, but rather all Eastern Latvia. A usual route to the concert hall is found and driven as well as by the visitors from Jēkabpils, Madona, Gulbene, Rīga, Cēsis, Valmiera and other cities. During last year, the Embassy of Latgale GORS has become one of the most popular sightseeing objects in Latgale. It is important to mention the artistic aspect – it is attractive to the artists and musical collectives from Latvia and abroad. Symbolically speaking, Rēzekne has returned in the map of the culture events of Latvia, yet having regular performances, premieres of the leading professional collectives, as well as being the pace of new culture creations. Deputy State Secretary for Cultural Policy of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Latvia Dace Vilsone indicates, “with the opening of the Embassy of Latgale GORS, noticeably has changed the culture life in Latvia – it is no more homogeneous and concentrated in Riga. Now, even musicians who mostly perform in Riga have developed the interest in the regions.”

Since the Embassy of Latgale GORS is a venue of the European level, already now among the visitors could be met the citizens of Estonia, Lithuania and Russia. However, in the perspective, as one of the goals is set an acquisition of the nearby border regions.  

Existing Traditions and New Festivals

The Embassy of Latgale GORS is not only a stage for already made concert program performances, but also a place in Rēzekne and Latgale where the new cultural values are created locally. In 2014, the Embassy of Latgale GORS took over the organization of the Annual Latgalian Cultural Award “Boņuks”. This is the residence of the festival “Baroque Music Days in Rezekne” that in the last year has received a significant attention with the new staging – opera-pasticcio “A Home for Műtel”. In addition, the regular performances are presented by the local Wind Instrument Orchestra “Rēzekne”, Rezekne Big Band and Rezekne Chamber Orchestra. This year also, a place will take the Baroque Music Days in Rezekne – this time, with the leading theme of the Czech baroque.

In 2014, thanks to the perseverance of the world famous organist Iveta Apkalna, the collaboration between the Embassy of Latgale GORS and J. Ivanovs Rezekne Secondary Music School and support from the State Cultural Capital Foundation and JSC "Latvijas valsts mezi", the concert hall has obtained a new digital instrument – Johannus Ecclesia organ. Due to the instrument, in the year 2015 a new tradition will be established – I International Festival of Organ Music „ORGanismi” (transl. ORGanisms), with an organ as the central concert instrument. The festival program will be created in symbiosis with an orchestra, dance and performances for children. Artistic Director of the festival – Iveta Apkalna.

Acknowledgement of the Visitors and Professionals

The team of the Embassy of Latgale GORS is happy that the recognition of the work and the provided culture activities has been gained not only from the visitors, but also from the professionals of various areas. The building of the concert hall has received the “Best Building in Latvia” award at the Exposition of the Latvian Builders Association. Recently it has received the award as the best new-built construction of the year 2013, and also have been among the finalists of the Latvian Architecture Award. The brand of GORS, created by the brand nest “Matka” and agency „Asketic”, has received the Grand Prix of the Festival of Creative Excellence Adwards 2014. However, Rezekne City Council has awarded the concert hall for it`s input in the creating process of the city image and Latgale Planning Region has acknowledged Austrumlatvijas koncertzale, Ltd. as the “Merchant of the Year 2014” in Latgale region.

The events presented at the Embassy of Latgale GORS have received both the culture award of Latvian Television and Latvian Radio “Kilograms kultūras” (transl. Kilogram of Culture) and the nomination at the Annual Culture Award of newspaper “Diena”, and also have been nominated and have received the Latvian state award in music – the Great Music Award and other recognitions. The Embassy of Latgale GORS has received positive assessments of the experts and the society for the high quality acoustic of the Big Hall that way rising high the interest of the performing by the local and foreign musicians. The said is supported by the numerous recordings of the acoustic concerts made at the concert hall in the year 2014, including the P. Vasks string quartet (under the lead of Normunds Šnē) CD recording that has received a foreign recognition of the experts. 

Celebrating the second anniversary of the Embassyof Latglale GORS, one of the author of the building project – architect of Vizuālās modelēšanas studija, Ltd. Uldis Balodis says: „The city has obtained a valuable center that unites the people and creates new opportunities. No matter what is designed, it acquires the value only when there are the people that understand the right way of using it. I am delighted for the main hope to come true – this is not only a building, not only the music. Here are the people who need that.”

Road Reconstruction on the Route to Rēzekne

The Embassy of Latgale GORS informs that the time planned for the drive from Rīga, Jēkabpils, Varakļāni and Daugavpils to Rēzekne should be increased due to the road reconstruction works on the route Viļāni-Rēzekne and Daugavpils – Špoģi. The road condition can extend the time spent on the road.

Following the information provided by „Latvian State Roads”, please observe:

Reconstruction of 13.6 km long road surface section on the highway A12, route Viļāni–Rēzekne. Technological interruption, with no significant influence on the traffic.

Reconstruction of 21 km long road surface section on the highway A13, route Daugavpils–Špoģi. Six traffic light controlled sections, speed limits. Estimated driving time through the reconstruction zone ~ 40 minutes.

The personal exhibition of the paintings of the artist Jeļena Antonova. J. Antonova was born in the family of artists, grew up and studied in Rezekne. She has graduated from the Latgale branch of the Latvian Academy of Arts, receiving the Bachelors and Masters degree. Currently working as a teacher of the visual arts and leading a private arts studio. The opening of the exhibition will be held on May 3, at 12.00.

International Ballet Concert „The Originals“

In the first part of the concert the leading soloists of the Lithuanian National Ballet and the ballet dancers of the Latvian National Opera will perform the classic ballet pearls from the ballet performances as „Tristan and Isolde”, „Giselle”, „Le Corsaire”, „The Sleeping Beauty” and „Diana and Actaeon”. The second part of the concert will reveal the exclusive author work „The Originals” by the Latvian National Opera, ballet and theatre prima – ballerina Margarita Demjanoka. The goal of the project is to find and highlight the beautiful, talented and active children living in Rezekne city. The competition final show attendants will have an opportunity to see and evaluate the work that has been done during many weeks. All together, in the competition participate 16 children of the age group from 7 to 10 years. At the finale will be nominated ''The Queen and the King of Rezekne 2015''.

The Exhibition of the qualification works by the students of the Arts Education program of the Rezekne School of Art and Design. Displayed works are made in different genres (still life, landscape, cityscapes, the domestic scenes and other) in the form of stylized paintings.
 

Chinese Martial and Dance Art

On May 4, at 17.00, in the Big Hall of the Embassy of Latgale GORS will perform “The Contemporary Dragon Kungfu Company” – a dance company founded by the world famous Kung Fu star Jackie Chan in 2006.

“Dazzling, fascinating technique of the martial arts, accuracy accomplished to its perfection, in the union with the beautifulness of the dance – this is something that has not been experienced in the Baltics before. Every and each one will be carried away by this!” about the dance performance says the choreographer Olga Žitluhina.

Dance company „The Contemporary Dragon KungFu Company” was founded by the world famous Kung Fu star Jackie Chan in 2006. The troupe members have mastered the martial arts at the most famous Kung Fu schools of China, including the Shaolin Monastery that is known to be particularly rich with the traditions. They have also studied the ballet and contemporary dance under the lead of the Beijing Dance Academy scholars. The dance company has participated in the shootings of the movies like: „Dragon Blade”, „The Karate Kid”, „Taichi 2”, „Shaolin Bodhidarma Straight Sword”, „The Underdog Knight” and „Wheat”, as well as in the plays and broadcast performances. 

Kung Fu and contemporary dance performance “Gateway” was produced under the inspiration of the essays “On Doors” by Christopher Morley. The performance is ascetic, able to surprise with its philosophical deepness and the offered synergy of the strength based in Kung Fu and the beauty of the contemporary dance. Opening and closing of the doors is the most important action in the life of the human being. The doors are the mystery! Before the opening of the doors, no one knows what to expect behind them (Christopher Morley). Since the premiere in Beijing, in 2013, the performance has gained an international recognition in the USA, Bulgaria, Israel, Russia, Cyprus and Slovakia.

The tickets for the special dance performance cost from 7,00 to 12,00 €, and can be purchased at the ticket systems of the Embassy of Latgale GORS and “Biļešu Paradīze”.

Greeting to the Sun!

At the end of March, in a lobby on the first floor of the Embassy of Latgale GORS will be opened a painting exhibition “Greeting to the Sun!” of four Latgalian artists V.I.V.A. The exhibition will be on display until the end of April.

Under the mystery title V.I.V.A. are hidden names of the artists Vēsma Ušpele, Ilze Griezāne, Vija Stupāne and Agra Ritiņa. All painters are coming from Latgale, and all are united by a school –Rezekne Art and Design School and the branch of Latvian Academy of Arts in Latgale.

Joint collaboration began in 2006, when the young artists started attending the workshops. This was the moment for sharing the knowledge, experience, way of gaining some rest, as well as energy and confidence about importance of the chosen creative path. Now the idea of what we understand as an art, has found an irreversible expression of itself in all of these four personalities. A long lasting collaboration is an acknowledgement of the strength of the painter`s personalities. Only confident artists can work side by side for such a long period of time, complementing each other, and still preserving their individual character; even more – developing, and with each public display of their creative works, they confirm that the unique creative signature is perfected even more.    

All 23 displayed paintings are telling the story about the life that some times should be perceived as a game – easily and freely, as playing. This is the way the result can be found - incidentally, but still convincing and powerful. The exhibition “Greeting to the Sun!” will be on display until April 30, in the lobby of the first floor. No admission fee.

Spring Subscription Offer

For the very first time, the Embassy of Latgale GORS offers the set of the events taking a place this spring for the subscription. This includes the attendance to the four different events for an affordable price.  

A very special offer is prepared for the springtime in Rezekne city. It provides an opportunity to enjoy performances of the outstanding Latvian artists and local musicians of Rezekne, as well as the performances of the foreign artists. The Embassy of Latgale GORS plans to continue the subscription program also for the next event season. 

April 10 Concert Program of Latvian Radio Choir “Stories and Cantos”
For the first time, the compositions from the opening and closing concerts of the Event of the Leading Choirs of Europe or the TENSO days, that took the place in October of 2014, will be performed in one concert program. The inspiration for it was gained from the stories and fairytale theme, as well as the compositions in the theme of the ancient singings. In the concert will participate Aleksandrs Maijers, Catholic priest Kārlis Miķelsons, Old Believers priest Father Vasīlijs and soprano Iveta Romancāne.
 
April 12 Parfenov’s Sax Band (Saint Petersburg) and Rezekne Big Band with the Program “Jazz and Not Only…”
Performance of the spectacular Nikolaj Parfenov`s jazz ensemble from Saint Petersburg, for this time complemented with a local pleasure – Rezekne Big Band under the lead of Lauris Amantovs. The compositions of Raimonds Pauls, Frank Sinatra, Peter Erskine and other jazz musicians, as well as potpourri of Latgalian folk songs. 
 
May 4 Kung Fu Dance Performance “Gateway” (China)
“Contemporary Dragon Kungfu Company“ was founded by the world famous Kung fu star Jackie Chan in 2006. In the dance style of the company is united the traditional Chinese martial art with the contemporary dance technique and the martial practice in which could easily be recognized the unique acrobatic fighting style of Jackie Chan.
 
May 28 LNSO Season Closing Concert with the Violinist Vineta Sareika
Under the lead of the conductor Andris Poga, Latvian National Symphonic Orchestra will close their concert season with the compositions of Sergey Rachmaninoff, Jean Sibelius and Vilnis Šmīdbergs. In the concert will participate the outstanding violinist Vineta Sareika.
 
The price for the spring event subscription is 20,00 € (when purchasing the tickets for the each of the events separately, the total for the subscription seats is worth at least 35,00 €).
